Take-Home-A Book Program
The Take-Home-A Book Program gives every registered child an age-appropriate book.Books are purchased from Open Books and CBRE Property Management acts as a donation depository for receiving books and other acts of kindness on behalf of the Children’s Rooms from private citizens as well as non-profit agencies. Such agencies are Bernie’s Book Bank, the Chicago Bar Association, the Young Lawyers Section of the Chicago Bar Association, and the Children’s Law Project.
Volunteer Program
Individuals interested in volunteering may complete a Children’s Room Volunteer Application at any Children's Room of their choice. Also, applications are available at the Office of the Chief Judge, Human Resources Section or the director of the Children's Rooms Program, both located at 69 W. Washington, Suite 3300, Chicago, Illinois 60602. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age. For the safety of children, staff, and volunteers, the Volunteer Program has been placed temporarily on hold until further notice due to Covid-19.
Exceptions are made regarding age for church youth programs with supervisors who are required to accompany the youth and oversee arts and crafts projects they bring to complete with the children. Corporations seeking to perform community service hours for team building may also volunteer.
It is important to note that everyone interested in participating in the Children’s Rooms Volunteer Program is required to submit to a background screening, including supervisors.
Cops in the Kitchen Program
Cook County deputy sheriffs engage with the children so that they become comfortable with and not afraid of men and women in police uniforms. Activities can include providing snacks, playing checkers, or reading a book.
