Expungements/Sealings

Expungements/Sealings are filed in the Circuit Court Clerk’s Office, Room 136.

  • File in person in Room 136.
  • A fee is needed for filing.
  • Indigency requests can be made at the time of filing and will be heard by a judge.

All expungements/sealings are granted or denied by the Presiding Judge.

  • The following agencies are given notification of filing and can object within the legally provided time limits:
    • State’s Attorney’s Office
    • Arresting municipality
    • City Attorney’s Office for arresting municipality
    • Illinois State Police ·        

If there is an objection to expungement or sealing:

  • Petitioner is sent a copy of the objection by mail.
  • By the Assistant State’s Attorney or
  • By the State Police
  • A court date is set for hearing on the objection by the Presiding Judge.
  • Notification of the scheduled hearing date is sent by the Clerk’s Office to the Petitioner by mail.

If there is no objection, the expungement or sealing is granted:

  • Petitioner is sent notification in the mail by the Clerk’s Office.
