The Hon. Judith C. Rice named acting presiding judge of Domestic Violence Division

Starting today, the Hon. Judith C. Rice is the new acting presiding judge of the Domestic Violence Division, according to Chief Judge Timothy C. Evans. She is the first African-American to hold this position.

“Judge Rice is an excellent judge and has spent many years as a dedicated public servant,” said Judge Evans. “I am confident that she will succeed in this new leadership role as we continue to expand services and access in the Domestic Violence Division.” 

Before being elected to the judiciary in 2014, Judge Rice served in executive positions at BMO Harris Bank, most recently as senior vice president and head of community affairs and economic development. She also has served as a prosecutor with the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office and as an assistant corporation counsel for the City of Chicago and director of the Department of Revenue between 1993 and 1995. She was elected Chicago City Treasurer after serving as the first female commissioner of two key city agencies -- the Department of Water from 1996 until 1999 and the Department of Transportation from 1999-2000. 

Born and raised in Chicago, Judge Rice earned her law degree from John Marshall Law School and graduated cum laude from Loyola University Chicago with a bachelor’s degree in communication. 

Judge Rice serves on several non-profit community boards, including the Uhlich Children’s Advantage Network (UCAN) and the Chicago Children’s Advocacy Center. 

“I am humbled and honored by this appointment and will work hard to serve the citizens of Cook County,” Judge Rice said. 

Judge Rice replaces Hon. Raul Vega, who is retiring after almost 20 years on the bench. He became head of the Domestic Violence Division in 2018.
