Circuit Judge Tommy Brewer appointed Acting Presiding Judge of Sixth District

Released On 01/23/2017

Circuit Court of Cook County Chief Judge Timothy C. Evans today appointed Circuit Judge Tommy Brewer as Acting Presiding Judge of the court’s Sixth Municipal District effective immediately. He succeeds former Presiding Judge Marjorie C. Laws who retired on Friday, January 20, 2017.

As Acting Presiding Judge, Brewer will oversee the daily administration of the court’s operations in the Sixth Municipal District courthouse located in south suburban Markham, Illinois. The Sixth District serves 33 villages and municipalities of southern Cook County and is one of the six geographic districts into which the court has divided Cook County for management and administrative purposes.

Chief Judge Evans praised former Presiding Judge Laws, who oversaw the Sixth Municipal District for the last eight (8) years of her 21 years as a judge. “Marjorie Laws demonstrated effective leadership and superb administrative skills in her role as a presiding judge. Judge Laws served the public and the court system with integrity and distinction throughout her long and honorable career on the bench, and she will be greatly missed by all,” said Chief Judge Evans.

Evans continued, “Judge Brewer exhibits the same high level of leadership and administrative skills as Judge Laws, and I expect him to do equally well in the performance of his duties and responsibilities as Acting Presiding Judge.”

Judge Brewer first joined the bench in 2010 when he was appointed to a circuit judge vacancy by the Illinois Supreme Court. He was initially assigned to the First Municipal District where he presided over traffic matters and later felony preliminary hearings. He was elected a circuit judge in November 2012.

In 2013, Judge Brewer was assigned to the Sixth Municipal District where he hears domestic violence matters, as well as presiding over felony trials, paternity cases, and traffic matters.

He also assisted Presiding Judge Laws in an administrative capacity by reviewing judicial resources to best serve the needs of the Sixth District, making courtroom assignments to cover absences due to illness or vacation, and recommending judges for assignment in the district.
